Differences Between a Deer Mineral Block and Natural Mineral Rock

Some of us have a sweet tooth and some crave salty stuff—like a perfectly cured piece of jerky. Deer have a natural craving for salt. They also need it—and an abundance of other minerals—for optimum health. Which is why it makes sense we use a deer mineral block to attract deer to our lands.

Today, as a good hunter, outdoorsman/woman, and steward over your animals, you want to attract deer and provide a quality mineral site that nurtures and helps them grow. So which type of mineral block does that best

Deer blocks come in three basic forms: white salt blocks, mineral blocks, and natural mineralized salt rocks. Let’s talk about each and which is best for herd management.

Supplementing Deer Mineral Blocks

White-tailed deer particularly crave salt in spring and summer when water and potassium are high in lush green vegetation. But salt can also be an effective carrier to provide dozens of other important minerals deer need. That’s why salt shouldn’t be the only factor you look for or assume deer want when choosing blockA complete spectrum of balanced macro- and microminerals that nourish deer is essential.

So which kind of mineral block will help you get the most bang for your buck?

Pressed White Salt Blocks

Deer salt blocks provide deer sodium chloride, but no other beneficial minerals.

Pure salt blocks contain sodium and chloride but no other beneficial deer minerals.

Simple white salt blocks contain the sodium chloride deer crave—but that’s it. No other beneficial mineralsPure salt can be somewhat effective as an attractant in spring and summer, but during the fall deer’s hankering for salt drops, and so will visits at these sites.

Also, pure salt, without other balanced minerals, may create kidney and vascular problems if deer consume too much. Straight salt may temporarily attract deer, but does little to nourish or improve herd health—and may actually decrease it.

Advantages:

  • May attract deer during spring and summer.

Disadvantages:

  • Manufactured, processed, and heat pressed.
  • No additional minerals to improve deer health.
  • Too much salt intake can create health problems.
  • Won’t attract deer year-round.
  • Dissolves more quickly in rain and humidity.

Pressed Deer Mineral Blocks

Pressed deer mineral blocks contain only some of the nutrients deer need.

Most manufactured deer mineral blocks contain 7-10 added minerals, but also sweeteners and artificial attractants.

A manufactured deer mineral block contains salt and some added nutrients. These often include calcium and phosphorous—which support bone and antler development—copper, zinc, cobalt, magnesium, manganese, and some targeted vitamins.

Choosing a mineral block over salt is a step up, but most manufactured blocks still don’t deliver the full spectrum of minerals deer need for optimum growth and health.  And most blocks also contain things you don’t want deer to eat—like synthetic flavors, scents, and sweeteners as attractants.

In fact, this Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife article noted while sugar may increase mineral licking (so maybe deer do have a sweet tooth)it also causes tooth decay that diminishes food consumption and deer health.

Advantages:

  • Contains more nutrients (typically around 7-10 added minerals and several vitamins).
  • Flavor and scent agents attract yearround.

Disadvantages:

  • Manufactured, processed, and heat pressed.
  • Many include synthetic flavors or scents.
  • Many include sugars which diminish health.
  • Doesn’t include a complete spectrum of minerals.
  • Dissolves more quickly in rain and humidity.

Natural Mineralized Salt Rocks

Redmond Trophy Rock mineral block includes 60+ deer minerals to improve health.

Natural Redmond Trophy Rock contains 60+ balanced minerals to nourish deer and improve health.

Mineralized salt rocks, like Redmond Hunt Trophy Rock, are really just that—solid mineral rocks created by nature. They’re mined straight from the ground and sold in their natural state—which means they hold up much better in the field than pressed blocks. They also have a potent scent to attract deer, particularly when wet.

Mineral rocks have natural electrolytes and dozens of balanced trace minerals white-tail need—and not just the salt they crave. The plethora of macro- and micronutrients aid immune health, reproduction, fetal growth, milk production, and digestion, to name a few. Deer love and lick these rocks year-round and seek the nutrients they provide during every life phase.

Advantages:

  • 60+ balanced trace minerals for optimum health
  • Nutrients come in the same form deer find them in the wild.
  • Year-round attractant that also nourishes.
  • Contains electrolytes to hydrate.
  • All-naturalmined rocks.
  • No artificial flavors, dyes, or sweeteners.
  • Holds up better in rain or humidity.

Disadvantages:

  • No added vitamins.
